Quirindi local Madison Sharp has recently participated in the Westfield National Youth Championships as part of the Northern NSW Select Squad.
Her team, which also consisted of fellow Northern Inland Football players Phoebe Cave and Hollie Constable, played particularly well and managed to win three of their five matches. The tournament was held at Coffs Harbour’s C.ex International Stadium from July 7 to July 11.
In their opening fixture, Northern NSW Select went down 2 -1 to Capitol Football. Their next match against Tasmania saw them suffer defeat again, losing 1 – 0.
Despite two losses, the squad pulled together to succeed in their next three encounters. When facing Victoria Country they pulled ahead and won 4 – 1. They followed this up by winning against Northern Territory 2 – 1 and completed the tournament with a 3 – 0 victory over NSW Country.
Tamworth’s Hollie Constable was a notable performer for the side, having scored the majority of the team’s goals including all three in their final match.
Madison Sharp, who plays midfield, has been a part of the Northern NSW Select Squad for the past two years. She was generally impressed by the way she performed during the tournament.
“I think that overall I played pretty good. I was much better than last year because I had much more experience,” she explained. “A highlight for me would probably be playing some of the best of my football and getting to know all the girls on the team.”
Scouts who attended the tournament will be selecting an ‘All-Stars’ squad from among the player pool and Madison hopes to be chosen.
