Friday February 21, Quirindi Racecourse was packed for yet another jam packed event on the social calendar for 2014. Quirindi Akubra Cup was a sure hit to start off the 2014 social season.
Chairs and tables spread throughout the sun for all to enjoy, a members bar packed with punters and excitement, and a trackside filled with cheerful spectators and racegoers.
A hen’s day was celebrated at this year’s cup along with a not so serious fake wedding.
Nardi and Guy Beresford of Quirindi along with a group of friends from down Gosford way that attend the cup every year decided to make a little fun this year and play the roles of Bride and Groom and the extended wedding party.
“We are all together every year for this event so we all decided why not have a little fun and do a fake wedding” commented Nardi.
Fashions on the Field sure was a hit this year with a field of over fifteen guys and girls dressed to their best vying for the title.
Blacks, Whites and Reds were a very popular choice for the ladies, but Tracy Press won the judges choice dressed in green and beige. Male winner Jake Williams wore a simple but elegant cream jacket and black pants. Neutrals were a hit with the judges for the men but a splash of bold colour the judges liked to see for the females.
The 2014 Akubra Cup sure got the crowd’s energy going with spectators fast to find a spot on the side line as the horses jumped the barriers. A close race was run with it all coming to the home straight.
Brave Ali took out the 2014 Akubra Cup, trained by Craig Martin of Tamworth, in a share of fifteen owners, and rode well by jockey K Nestor. A close second came in to Al’s Gold (jockey B.Hodder), third to Lancelot (jockey A Cavallo) and a fourth placing to locally owned Kwilas Law Trained by Luke Griffiths from scone, rode by jockey Greg Ryan and owned by M.B Perkins of Quirindi.
2014 Akubra Cup brought an afternoon of enjoyful, fun filled country racing with 2015 gearing up to be bigger and better.
