Legendary cricketer Trevor Chappell, Tasmanian Roar’s Carly Ryan, British cricketer Stuart Plant and Tamworth’s Mark Barreca were guest hosts for the 2014 Game Development Blitz Tour which visited Quirindi on Monday.
The tour, which will visit schools and sporting clubs around the area, has already dropped into Quirindi and Coonabarabran. It will also visit Narrabri on March 26, Gunnedah on March 27 and Tamworth on March 28.
On Monday, students from Quirindi Public School, St. Joseph’s Quirindi, Quirindi High School and local cricket players all attended one and a half hour sessions with the Development Blitz team. This was a great opportunity for young people to be encouraged to take up the sport and get involved with more physical activity.
One of the tours guest hosts Carly Ryan, who plays for the Tasmanian Roar, is keen to develop Women’s cricket in rural areas where leagues are often non-existent. “With the recent success of both our national teams, more funding is now available for the development of women’s cricket in Australia,” she said.
She encourages young women to play cricket, highlighting that new opportunities now exist which have not been available in the past.
The guest hosts will depart from Tamworth on Friday afternoon.
